Craggan

A lot has been happening up at Craggan. The camp site however very much remains as a natural wooded area and is just ideal for outdoor activities, backwoods shelters, cooking on wood fires - in fact, just ideal for Scouting and Guiding. However, we have just renewed one of the buildings (see bottom RH picture below) and are busy installing renewable energy lighting in the buildings to minimise the risk of fire in these wooden buildings.

There is still plenty to do so if you can spare a few hours please discuss the options with Ian Ogilvy or Adrian Sims - and even better if you have some Scouts, Guides or Explorer Scouts to help as well.

The current details in the camp site booklet are -

It is hoped that, should you choose to camp at Craggan, you will have an enjoyable time, and that the weather will be kind. The following information may be of help -

CRAGGAN is a large, sheltered campsite located in a remote glen lying between the Braco –  Comrie road (B827) and the Muthill – Crieff road (A822).
(O.S. Sheet 57, Grid Ref 808173)  Direction map attached.

ACCESS As we do not wish the camping areas damaged vehicles are not allowed past the hard surfaced car park, which is for cars and light vans only. Sorry, NO large vehicles are permitted inside the gate.(Please allow for this if bringing heavy equipment)

FACILITIES There are three huts on site: a small storage hut, a kitchen/storage hut (5m x 3m) containing Calor gas cookers, and a large hut (10m x 5m) for storage and wet weather shelter. Equipment is available on site for 4 patrols and their leaders, or for 36 people Group camping. Extra equipment may be brought if required, as the site is large enough for 50+ campers. No lighting is supplied, so it is essential that torches etc. are brought. A gas fridge-freezer may be available on request.

WATER There are two water taps on site, and whilst there are filters in the water supply line to remove solid articles it is recommended that the water is boiled for drinking. Alternatively bottled water may be brought for this purpose.

FIREWOOD There is more than adequate dead wood lying around on the fringes of the site and in the adjoining wood.

LATRINES are chemical toilets. Elsan fluid is provided. There is a wooden toilet block to house four of these. Toilet tents are also available.

CHARGES The charge for the site is £2.00 per person per night payable on collection of the keys. If you bring your own camping equipment the cost is £1.50 per person per night.

SHOPPING There are some shops for groceries etc. in Muthill, and larger supermarkets in Crieff. Milk cannot be delivered to the site, but D&D Dairies, Brioch Road, Crieff (01764 654271) will take orders and arrange a suitable collection point.

MINIBUS HIRE is available in Muthill.

ACTIVITIES include hill walking (to be pre-arranged with the Estate); swimming available in Crieff and at Crieff Hydro (by arrangement); pony trekking at Crieff Hydro; visits to Auchingarroch Wildlife Centre, which is only a few miles along the road.
